The use of biotechnology in plant multiplication is one of the strategies used by Agriculture in the province of Holguín, to maintain the vitality of crops and increase the availability of prioritized crops.

In a biofactory, located in the industrial zone of the eastern city, plantain, taro and yam, among other crops, are obtained and destined to productive centers or farmers with favorable results in the commercialization of these lines.

Eugenio Almarales, a specialist at this institution, explained to ACN that to develop this process, several fundamental steps are followed, taking into account high quality standards that guarantee the performance of the final product.

Almarales explained that strong and healthy offspring, known as donors, are selected, which enter the factory and go through three phases of division, until they are suitable for planting in the field.

He indicated that the material used in reproduction is placed in a test tube and passes through several chambers with humidity and lighting conditions that allow up to three thousand seedlings to be obtained from a single mother plant.

He stressed that an exhaustive inventory of the destinations of these positions is also being followed, which allows the industry to be resupplied to start the process again, with plant individuals that meet the established parameters.

An extensive research program is also being developed in Holguín aimed at increasing crop and harvest yields, optimizing water use and improving soil conditions, among the sector's priorities. (Source: ACN)
