Before departing Cuba for Guyana on Saturday, President David Granger met with and held discussions with Cuban President, Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez.

According to a statement from the Guyana Embassy in Cuba, the discussions covered several areas, including relations between Guyana and Cuba and the United States and Cuba.

“President Diaz Canel pointed out that the economic and financial blockade against Cuba was tightening but that Cuba was making every effort to pursue its economic and social objectives in the interest of the Cuban people”, the statement said.

It added that the two Presidents agreed that Caricom-Cuba cooperation is vital to the development of the Caribbean region. Both sides agreed that they will have to continue to search for ways and means aimed at deepening collaboration on all fronts.

President David Granger also used the meeting to update the Cuban leader on the current political situation in Guyana and clarified to him the circumstances that could lead to early elections this year.

Mr. Granger thanked his Cuban counterpart for the continued excellent care he has been obtaining in Cuba, where he is undergoing treatment for non-hodgkin lymphoma.

The President has now completed the fourth round of his treatment and his doctors have indicated that his progress and response are satisfactory and in conformity with what they expected.

President Granger returned to Guyana on Saturday night.
