India important partner of choice: US ahead of NSA-level talks

    Synopsis

"India is an important partner of choice for the United States in a number of spaces, and that includes trade cooperation," State Department's deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters in Washington. "It, of course, includes security cooperation. It also includes technological cooperation. I don't want to get too ahead of the process or get ahead of any specific meetings that might be coming down the pike."

India Important Partner of Choice: US Ahead of NSA-level Talks
India is an important partner of choice for the US, the Biden administration has said ahead of the Ajit Doval-Jake Sullivan talks on critical and emerging technologies in Washington DC on Tuesday.

National security advisor Doval will participate in the inaugural high-level dialogue of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) with his US counterpart Sullivan. Ahead of Doval's trip, Deputy NSA Vikram Misri was in DC to meet stakeholders.

The India envoy to USA tweeted, "Delighted to host Deputy NSA, dear colleague and friend @VikramMisri at India House. Thank you @WhiteHouse NSC PDNSA Jon Finer, Indo- Pacific coordinator Dr Kurt Campbell and friends from Admin, think-tanks, strategic community & industry for joining."

ICET was launched in May 2022 on the sidelines of the Quad Summit. India had then issued a statement saying that "co-led by the National Security Council Secretariat in India and the US National Security Council, ICET would forge closer linkages between government, academia and industry of the two countries in areas such as AI, quantum computing, 5G/6G, biotech, space and semiconductors".

The White House had said, "The leaders welcomed the launch of a United States-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET), spearheaded by the National Security Councils of the two countries to expand partnership in critical and emerging technologies."

ICET is a unique initiative led by the Indian National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and the US National Security Council (NSC) and is a product of informal discussions between and within the two organisations.

"The aim is to "expand partnership" in critical and emerging technologies. It is supposed to serve as a coordination bridge to catalyse existing efforts at technology cooperation while stimulating a renewed sense of purpose for the same. In doing so, it is certain to also introduce new lines of collaboration," according to a paper by Carnegie India released ahead of Tuesday's meeting.

After his US trip, Doval is likely to make an official visit to Moscow in the second week of February for regional dialogue on Afghanistan, involving Russia-Iran-India-Central Asia. He will also hold bilateral consultations with his Russian counterpart Gen Nikolay Patrushev.
