'Banana Republic stuff': Kansas, Missouri politicians sound off on Trump indictment
BREAKING NEWS AND THAT BREAKING NEWS. FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP INDICTED FOR A SECOND TIME. GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY. I’M KRIS KETZ AND I’M LARA MORITZ. HE FACES FEDERAL CHARGES RELATED TO HIS HANDLING OF CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS WHILE OUT OF OFFICE. GABBY TONIGHT’S KALYN NORWOOD IS LIVE TONIGHT IN OUR WASHINGTON BUREAU WITH WHAT HAPPENED. AND CAITLIN, WHAT’S NEXT? WELL, CHRIS AND LAURA, FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP BREAKING THE NEWS OF THIS INDICTMENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA TONIGHT. THIS FOLLOWS A MONTH LONG INVESTIGATION BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE OVER HIS MISHANDLING OF CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS. A FORMER PRESIDENT IS NOW FACING FEDERAL CHARGES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN US HISTORY. FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP POSTING THE TRUTH SOCIAL THURSDAY NIGHT THAT HE’S BEEN INDICTED ON CHARGES OF MISHANDLING CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS AT HIS FLORIDA STATE. THERE’S NEVER BEEN ANYTHING LIKE WHAT’S HAPPENED. I’M AN INNOCENT MAN. I’M AN INNOCENT PERSON. A TRUMP ATTORNEY CONFIRMS THE INDICTMENT INCLUDES SEVEN CRIMINAL CHARGES. SPECIAL COUNSEL JACK SMITH LED THE INVESTIGATION INTO WHETHER THE FORMER PRESIDENT BROKE THE LAW AFTER OFFICIALS FOUND DOCUMENTS WITH CLASSIFIED MARKINGS AT MAR-A-LAGO AND WHETHER HE TRIED TO OBSTRUCT THE GOVERNMENT’S EFFORT TO GET THEM BACK. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SEVEN YEARS. THEY CAN’T STOP BECAUSE IT’S ELECTION INTERFERENCE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. LAWMAKERS COMMENTED EARLY THURSDAY AS SIGNS GREW AN INDICTMENT WAS CLOSE. IT IS GOING TO BE A WEIGHT AROUND HIS CANDIDACY THAT I THINK SHOULD BE INSURMOUNTABLE. I THINK WE SHOULD JUST LET THE PROCESS PLAY OUT FOR TRUMP. AND IF BIDEN GETS INDICTED, I WOULD SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT BIDEN. IN MARCH, MR. TRUMP WAS CHARGED IN NEW YORK WITH MORE THAN 30 FELONY COUNTS FOR FALSIFYING BUSINESS RECORDS, AND THE 2024 REPUBLICAN FRONTRUNNER IS FACING MORE LEGAL CHALLENGES. THERE’S INVESTIGATIONS INTO VOTING CORRUPTION IN GEORGIA. HE’S ALREADY BEEN INDICTED ON CHARGES OF CONSPIRACY IN NEW YORK. THIS IS A VERY FRAGILE HOUSE OF CARDS RIGHT NOW WITH TRUMP. AND IT WOULD NOT TAKE MUCH TO HAVE HIM COLLAPSE. KALYN NORWOOD REPORTING FROM OUR WASHINGTON BUREAU TONIGHT. WE’LL BE FOLLOWING UPDATES ON THIS DEVELOPING STORY.
