Colorado Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jared Polis allegedly pushed a female employee who was stealing files from an office in Boulder, Colorado, according to a police report from June 23, 1999.
Patricia Hughes was Polis’s outgoing personal assistant who tried to take files after letting him know she was stepping down, according to the police report. Polis is named as “Schutz” in the police report because it was recorded before he changed his name “to honor his mother’s maiden name” in 2000, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
“Hughes then tried to leave and Schutz did not let her leave. Hughes said that he grabbed her and pushed her back into the office,” according to the police report cited by the Washington Free Beacon. “Hughes said that when Schutz pushed her she was pushed back into a file cabinet, hurting her leg.”
“Hughes said that she then said that she was going to call 911 and went to the phone,” the report continued. “Hughes said that she tried calling 911 three times and twice Schutz hung the phone up. The third time Hughes got through.”
Police found files that did not belong to Hughes in her bag. They also found “two bruise marks on Ms. Hughes[‘s] left inside bicep and a red welt on her thigh,” according to the police report.
“The welt on her thigh she said was from Mr. Schutz pushing her back when she attempted to leave,” the report continued. “The welt was conducive with the a [sic] file cabinet in front of the door. There was also a key protruding from the upper right hand corner of the cabinet that could have produced the welt.”
Polis was 24 at the time of the incident. Hughes was 46. She died in August 2014, reported the Washington Free Beacon. Her obituary did not include a cause of death.

Polis represents Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District and is running against Republican state Treasurer Walker Stapleton, according to Ballotpedia. Real Clear Politics classifies the race as leaning Democratic.
